Prolific Painting and Inspiration– Paintings now available at Harmony Works, Redondo Beach!

Greetings Art Fans,

This has been a wonderful and prolific week. First, an announcement.  Harmony Works in Redondo Beach is now featuring my “Emotional Flowers” series.  8 of my paintings are now available. I’m especially excited about this venue, as Royce Morales, the owner, really ‘gets’ my work and has a wonderful selection of artists as well as handmade gifts and great music.  Check it out, 1705 South Catalina Avenue, Redondo Beach. She also has some great art classes for you aspiring artists.

Emotional Flowers continue to bloom in my world.  Two more paintings this week, both more abstract and evolved from their original sources. Enough gobble-de-gook.. I will be more specific… First one– “Unfurling 1″, oil, 24″x30″.  It began with photos taken on my recent trip to Hawaii.  From looking at my work or speaking with me, you’ll know how much I love the Hibiscus flower.  How lucky I was to have a hibiscus garden where I stayed.  I was able to really observe and capture the flowers at different times of day and different lighting conditions.  What really fascinated me is how they close up at night and then re-open each day.  The idea of being closed-up and then unfurling evolved into a metaphor for how we open to each other, unfurl, and then close up, depending on how we feel.  In this painting, I paid much less attention to the actual color of the flowers, and let the palette of soft pastel colors speak of feminine nature.  You’ll also notice that the unfurled petals are much richer and deeper in color– that’s allowing emotions to really sing and come out.. As I get to know someone, I feel more comfortable allowing my colors to show.. You may also see how the inner bud is shell-like in color and form. No accident– we typically hold that inner core of our true selves under many shells.. the most tender and vulnerable parts of ourselves are the ones that are most difficult to reveal, even to our loved ones.  For me, recent events in my life have made me realize that not everyone will understand me, and that I am obligated no matter what to be authentic and reveal who I am, even at the risk of rejection.   I hope you can relate.  How do you reveal your true self? Do you feel fear about being vulnerable? I know I do. I feel vulnerable just putting this out there.. but I feel I have to do it. When I share my emotions like this, I hope to inspire you as the viewer to do the same in your life.

Painting #2.. “Shadow Poppy”, oil, 16″x20″.. Truly a happy accident! When we allow inspiration to come up all around and not work so hard to find it or force it, it shows up everywhere. In this case, I was preparing an updated bio for Harmony Works, and in the process, was highlighting a photo and some text using Open Office.  All of a sudden, I gasped out loud.  The highlight ended up reversing all the colors, so I ended up with a blue and green and violet version of my “Esalen Poppy” painting.  I realized I needed to paint it immediately.. It made so much sense.. The title, “Shadow Poppy”, is another metaphor.. this painting is about recognizing and embracing the beauty of our shadow selves, what we think of as the negative parts of our personalities.  That is a very difficult process, yet the result is seeing how the shadow balances the light, our higher sevles. You can’t have light without shadow or happiness without sadness! It’s all a yin-yang balancing act.  There are also some shadow figures in this painting, see if you can find them or figure out what they are.  No clues! What shadows do you have? How do you recognize them?

Last but definitely not least, I am so very excited about my upcoming painting excursion on Friday to paint the Channel Islands for 5 days with David Gallup and Stephen Mirich along with 20 other artistic souls. It’s been a while since I painted out in the plain air (i.e. plein air).. and this is going to be anything but plain!  I will have the opportunity to do more Extreme Painting such as painting from a kayak as well as moonlight painting using a headlamp.  What I end up with is anyone’s guess.  I know I won’t be bored!  Until then, I wish you joy and inspiration.

…. Cindy

The Alchemy of Authenticity

Back from my travels to Hawaii and Costa Rica. Both trips were wonderful in different ways. In Hawaii, I had the opportunity to sink into nature, flowers, and earth.  A sunset visit to see the lava of Kilauea pouring into the sea was one of the most awe-inspiring experiences of my life. Time spent painting flowers and especially photographing at the Hawaii Botanical Gardens… An overnight visit to Ira Ono’s lovely Volcano Artist Cottage…. a luau with incredible dancers, music, and food.  Free time with my son, swimming and snorkeling and doing nothing…
Costa Rica… one of my favorite places in the world. No painting, just enjoying the 5 senses, nature, and a very deep place of connection. Finding the nooks and crannies of authenticity in my life. Just ‘being’.

And that is what my new painting is about– authenticity.  Being authentic with our emotions, feelings, and not being afraid of what others think, how I might look, what might they say? Interrelationships, the complexity of love, opening up to love and vulnerability, with no outcome or pull. Recognizing we all have ‘unfinished business’ that sometimes inpacts how we see others and our readiness for intimacy. Having compassion for others instead of putting up walls and freezing. Taking off the mask and just ‘allowing’.  Seeing the light and shadow alongside our true selves.

This painting was finished in one long session.  Like life, there was no ‘do-over’, just laying down and saying what needed to be said.  “Alchemy” is a radical departure for me in that it’s more abstract (though it’s based on a photo of Pikake flower petals that I deconstructed), and it’s very thin in the paint application. I wanted to achieve a more watery appearance, and also play with the idea of gray as a background.. Gray is so appropriate since it’s 1. neutral and 2. so much of what we do in our relationships and lives are grey areas.. we never know what’s next.  Giving up control and trusting that the right events will happen without effort.. it’s all easy, transparent, murky, beautiful.

Well, we did it!  What an exciting day!!  Thanks to everyone who stopped by to cheer me on and support my efforts, especially Rob, who suggested I put in a highlight in the middle.   It really did the trick. Pasadena Chalk Fest Day 1

Happy Father’s Day!

June Gloom is breaking, it’s a sunny day here in the South Bay, and I’m gearing up for Day 2 and officially breaking the Guinness Book of World Records for Chalk Painting! The Guinness Gang stopped by my square yesterday, documented, took photos, I signed a little banner and the forms, and received my ribbon. Yippee!!  Had a wonderful day out in the sun, met tons of people, saw amazing art, and got a great start on my mural.  Exhausting work yet so rewarding. I feel honored to share my art with so many people, and to enjoy their expressions as they soak in all the color.  Beautiful! Attaching a photo– being that this is my first large festival, it’s a real milestone and I think it’s looking good.

Pasadena Chalk Fest! Breaking the Guiness Book of World Records, June 19-20, 2010!!

Greetings,

Once again, June Gloom is upon us in Redondo Beach and what better time to head inland to beautiful downtown Pasadena for the 18th annual Pasadena Chalk Festival. I’ll be painting an 8×8 foot version of my hibiscus painting and will also have ‘Baby Love Hibiscus’ 1×1′ painting up for silent auction to raise money for the Lightbringer Project, a great organization that donates funds and art supplies to underprivileged children aruond the world. In case you have never been to a street painting festival, it’s an amazing event. Lots of incredibly talented, friendly artists who are happy to share their work and their passion for art with you.

In this case, we will have 500 artists painting over 150 works of art on the sidewalks of Paseo Colorado.  We plan to break the Guiness Book of World Records while we’re at it, so come on down and join us. More info is here at: http://www.pasadenachalkfestival.com .

I’ve also been busy preparing for the Redondo Beach Art Group’s annual extravaganza, The Power of Art. This year we will be holding the event at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center, the weekend of August 13-15th. Stay tuned for more details.

I will also have a large painting in the North Manhattan Beach Chamber of Commerce Stroll next month.. more details coming..

Lastly, you have until August 11th to see my painting “Laguna Low Tide” at the California Art Club’s ”Surf’s Up” Exhibition at the Blinn House, Pasadena City Women’s Club.  Info: http://www.californiaartclub.org/resources/wcc.shtml .

Next week, it’s off to NY with my son for vacation, family visit, painting, and a visit to Thomas Cole’s home and studio in Catskill, NY.  Thomas Cole is one of my major inspirations.  He founded the Hudson River School, and was one of the early American painters of the natural world.  His most famous series, “The Course of Empire”, is in the NY Historical Society and is not to be missed. More info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Cole .  Happy Summer!!

Recent paintings and I Madonnari-Street Painting Festivals

Greetings.
I had a wonderful day in Santa Barbara attending I Madonnari, the Italian Chalk Painting festival at the Mission. Artists from all over create works of art using vivid pastels on the sidewalks in front of and around the Mission. What amazing talent! I had so much fun networking with the artists, learning about techniques, and enjoying the beautiful day. Can’t wait to get my hands on some handmade chalk to use at the Pasadena Festival June 19th and 20th!
I also visited the SCAPE exhibit (So Cal Artists Painting for the Environment) and joined as a participating member. The group is devoted to painting the outdoors and donating back proceeds to environmental causes. Great work and great people. I look forward to participating in paintouts and exhibitions.
Lastly, I got some good plein air time in this weekend, a study of the incredible gardens at Esalen and a single rose from the Rose Garden by the Mission. Now to post the floral series!

Spring in SoCal- My work and upcoming events

Greetings and Happy May!
For me, spring always brings to mind coming out of slumber. Growing up in NY, I remember how excited I was to see the first flower. It was usually a single yellow daffodil in our front yard.   I am definitely out  of my winter doldrums and about with my artistic endeavors this month. I just came back from a wonderful 5 day painting workshop with Jennifer McChristian and 16 talented artists in Sedona.  What a great excusion in X-treme Plein Air Painting! 85 degree sunshine quickly degraded into hard rain, driving winds, and even a surprise snowstorm in Jerome.  Didn’t matter, I found my creative force and painted several small studies of the western landscape and surrounding area that will turn into full scale paintings.  It was a real challenge to paint with a limited palette of colors, as I sometimes will use 20 or more. I call them my ‘cheater’ colors– nothing like bright, pre-mixed colors right out of the tube! Purists might scoff at me and say, hey, you should be mixing them yourself.. However, when it comes to certain colors, especially the bright pinks, fuscias, etc. for flowers, it is very difficult to get that bright of a color.  Not that I would have needed those in Sedona, but please, just a little Burnt Siena.
Stay tuned for the Sedona Series, and yes, I am going to use Burnt Siena.. and just a few others…

Speaking of Jennifer, catch her new show at the brand new show at the brand new Silvana Gallery in Glendale. I love the urban nature of her work.  I attended the opening last night, check it out here: http://silvanagallery.com/Home_page/Events.html .

Paint-Out, Exhibition and Sale
May 8 – 10, 2010
Opening Reception, May 8th, 8PM
I’ll be showing my small plein air piece (featuring a bike of course), “There’s Always More to Explore”.
Stay tuned for more shows.. RBAG (Redondo Beach Art Group)  is gearing up with a host of events over the next few months.

I’m working on several themes these days.  At the top of the list is my Floral Series, featuring large closeups of flowers. Color is turned way way up, with very bright backgrounds to match- the backgrounds are almost like an aura to me.. hard to articulate.. best to see it and feel it. I’m experimenting with glazes and color layers on these works.  Lots of fun!  Take a look.. the new ones should be posted shortly.  The other theme that is near and dear to my heart is of course, landscapes. I’m finally finishing a Tuscany landscape that I’ve been wanting to paint since my visit in 2007, “The Count of Guizano” , featuring that beautiful Mediterranean light.  There is also one from Hearst Castle that I am looking forward to painting, as long as I don’t get another inspiration in between!

Ah, and one new and surprising inspiration, CHALK!!  For the first time, I participated in a chalk festival yesterday with my son, Micky.  Micky did a wonderful rendering of Ben 10′s Echo Echo alien, and I did a painting of wild beach roses. What great fun!I love the festive atmosphere and especially the live music at “Chalk it Up”.  Thanks especially  to Erika Robinson and Stefanie Conniff for pulling it all together. Looking forward to the big Pasadena Chalk Festival in June.

New updates coming to the site… stay tuned!
